Jacket by Lawrence Ratzkin. keywords: History Black America. DESCRIPTION - The history of Negro Americans is often misrepresented, when it is not overlooked entirely. This book, using contemporary personal accounts, newspaper articles, travel tales, memoirs, speeches, and other documents, traces the history of the American Negro from his African background through Colonial America and the Revolution, slavery and abolition, Reconstruction, urbanization and renaissance, the New Deal to the March on Washington. The documents, together with the lucid introductions and head- notes by the authors and a large number of excellent illustrations, reveal the Negro's role in the building of America - political, economic, military, educational and artistic. His slavery and struggles for freedom and equality are also well documented. THE NEGRO AMERICAN is an objective assessment. The authors, both noted authorities on Negro history, have selected documents that speak for themselves. Among the Negro Americans in this book are Phillis Wheatley, Crispus Attucks, Frederick Douglass, Nat Turner, Dred Scott, Booker T. Washington, W. E. B. DuBois, Marcus Garvey, Countee Cull en, Langston Hughes, Roy Wilkins, Martin Luther King, Jr., and James Baldwin. In addition to these, the contributors include Leo Africanus, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Alexis de Tocqueville, John Brown, Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, Andrew Johnson, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin D. Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy. THE NEGRO AMERICAN is a book that will make all Americans acutely aware of the Negro's contributions to American history, and his oppression under the American system. inventory #23809 Previous Owner's Name Penned in Front, Otherwise Very Good in Worn Dustjacket.
