This rallying cry became the most iconic phrase of the Civil Rights Movement, challenging the persistent command that Black people wait?in the holds of slave ships and on auction blocks, in segregated bus stops and schoolyards?for their long-deferred liberation. In Black Patience, Julius B. Fleming Jr. argues that, during the Civil Rights Movement, Black artists and activists used theater to energize this radical refusal to wait. Participating in a vibrant culture of embodied political performance that ranged from marches and sit-ins to jail-ins and speeches, these artists turned to theater to unsettle a violent racial project that Fleming refers to as "Black patience." Inviting the likes of James Baldwin, Lorraine Hansberry, Alice Childress, Douglas Turner Ward, Duke Ellington, and Oscar Brown Jr. to the stage, Black Patience illuminates how Black artists and activists of the Civil Rights era used theater to expose, critique, and repurpose structures of white supremacy. In this bold rethinking of the Civil Rights Movement, Fleming contends that Black theatrical performance was a vital technology of civil rights activism, and a crucial site of Black artistic and cultural production.…

On July 22, 1865, in Charleston, South Carolina, a man by the pen-name of Juhl wrote an editorial in the Charleston Courier describing many elements of city life in the post-Civil War period. The writer's real name was Reverend Julius J. Fleming, a prominent and outspoken citizen of Charleston widely respected for his roles as a preparatory school principal, a Methodist preacher, and earlier in his life, as the editor of the Sumter Watchman, a Charleston area newspaper. More importantly, however, the editorial Fleming penned shows a distinct knowledge of the fundamental problem that plagued Reconstruction South Carolina. Aggiungi al carrelloSquare octavo, hardcover (gray cloth), vii, 391 pp. Near Fine in a Very Good, mylar protected dust jacket with light foxing and edgewear. From Introduction: Julius J. Fleming was a shadowy figure who, except for a few brief years, left no distinct imprint on South Carolina's past. As school teacher, college president, Methodist minister, Baptist preacher, coroner, magistrate, editor, lawyer, would-be politician, and newspaper correspondent he was a multifaceted individual with a variety of roles and occupations. The years Julius Fleming chose to illuminate are important ones. Beginning in July, 1865, over a six-year period, he contributed some two hundred letters to the Charleston Courier. Most of these were written from Sumter, then a county seat of about two thousand, a hundred miles north of Charleston. In his columns Fleming, using the pen name of "Juhl," discussed the weather, crops, race relations, economic conditions, the Ku Klux Klan, politics, and many seemingly inconsequential but frequently revealing details concerning day-to-day life in the wake of military defeat. In addition to life in Sumter, Juhl tells s about visits to Columbia, Walhalla, Darlington, and other points in South Carolina, trips to New England, New York, and Florida, and an extensive tour with the Georgia Press Association in August, 1869. Since this is the same trek which catapulted a young man named Henry Woodfin Grady into the limelight, Juhl's letters as the official correspondent of the Charleston Courier take on special significance.
