Aggiungi al carrelloManuscript in ink, 8vo (175 x 110mm), two pages; tipped onto later paper. An autograph copy the most famous poem by the teacher and poet Julia Abigail Fletcher (1823-1908). She explains to her correspondent almost certainly the writer Eugene Field (1850-95), who had briefly been to college in Galesburg when and how she came to write it: the first verse was written in 1845, in Boston, as part of a tract for Sunday School use, the remainder 'the next morning in the teacher's class in Fremont Temple as an exercise in Pitman's Phonography. I have since forgotten the phonography but the world will not let me forget the little poem'. Indeed, Fletcher's sentimental religious poem was her most famous and widely-reprinted work, many times anthologised.
