It was written in a time of transition as the American Society of mechanical Engineers (ASME) was preparing to leave its first century behind. The text identifies concerns that were deemed to have the highest economic, scientific, and societal impact. Since the field of materials science and engineering was still in its infancy, a large part of the information engineers relied upon was engineering judgment. However, a series of highly publicized incidents made the public skeptical of the quality and safety of engineering decisions. This skepticism led to the demand for increased examination of the bases for engineering decisions, including those represented by ASME codes and standards. The author contends that the application of computer technology to material property data evaluation and analysis has made it critically important that engineering judgment be exercised at all points from sampling and testing procedures to the final product of computer analysis. Engineering judgment is defined in this context as human judgment based on knowledge and experience, not unlike intuition. The text goes on to acknowledge that the computer is a powerful tool, but that it cannot replace the human engineering judgment necessary in managing material property data. They established the Chun Wah Chinese Arts Studio and have been Chairman and Honorary Director of the Ontario Chinese Artists' Association for many years. Jeffrey Lo studied painting under the renowned bird-and-flower painter Zhang Shaoshi (Cheung Shiu-shek, 191491). He favours the "boneless" method in painting flowers, employing the light and colour techniques of the Geshan School of Ju Chao (181165) and Ju Lian (18281904). Esther Tam studied different painting genres with masters including Li Fenggong (18831967), Liang Boyu (Leung Pak-yu, 190378), He Shuhui (Ho Shuk-wai, b. 1919) and Tang Hong (b. 1926). She practices in the style of the Song dynasty painting academy, using detailed brushwork and the realistic depiction of birds and flowers. They are particularly skilled in painting peonies.
