Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Histories of the stars of the original American motion picture industry -- before 1920, before the major studios moved from New York to Hollywood -- are few and far between. Fortunately, coin dealer and iconoclastic researcher Q. David Bowers follows wherever his curiosity leads him. For his book on the soft drink Moxie, he acquired the records and historical archives of the Moxie Company, including scrapbooks and advertising clippings from the 1880s onward. In one particular volume were dozens of magazine and newspaper clippings about an early silent film star, Thanhouser Studios' leading lady Muriel Ostriche -- whose face was featured in the soft-drink firm's advertisements as "The Moxie Girl" from about 1915 to 1920, and who received twice as many votes as Mary Pickford in a nationwide popularity poll conducted by Motion Picture Story magazine in 1913. The last clipping was dated 1925. It was now 1986. Bowers realized if he was to track down anyone who'd known Ostriche (born Muriel Henrietta Oestrich, 1896, in New York City) time was short. He placed ads in numerous special-interest magazines. His break came when he was contacted by one of Muriel's daughters, Gloria. Would Gloria consent to be interviewed? Well, she replied, why didn't Mr. Bowers simply interview Muriel, herself? Muriel Ostriche was alive. So he did. This book is the result. And this copy is both signed by author Bowers, and affectionately inscribed BY silent film star Muriel Ostriche, then 91, to her biographer. Surely a unique artifact of early American cinema history, here reduced from $500. As with all our items priced higher than $90, this item will be shipped "signature required.". Signed by Author(s).
