Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Inscribed by author. Second Edition (April, 1920), including the newly added Foreword by Herbert Hoover. Boards in black cloth with gilt stamped spine. Some surface blemishes on spine and covers. A couple pages are roughly opened. Small spots of soiling on Foreword pages, else interior is clean. 12 illustrations. x, 218 pages. Inscribed ''To my old friend / Mr. Whisnant / with cordial / Xmas[?] greetings / Esther Pohl Lovejoy''. The memoir of Dr. Esther Lovejoy, describing her experiences in the Paris factory district of Levallois in the winter of 1917-1918, during the First World War, working at the Residence Sociale, known to the locals as The House of the Good Neighbor. This charitable ''social house'' had as its mission the care of the children of women who worked in the factories, poor families, and other disadvantaged individuals, including young women and the elderly. It also functioned as ''a clearing house for people in distress, giving immediate help in emergencies, and cooperating with other agencies and organizations for the relief of human suffering. It was in touch with hospitals, dispensaries, maternities, pre-natal and post-natal homes, creeches, canteens, milk and supply depots of different kinds.'' Lovejoy goes into great detail about the life and work at the House, and the prevailing social conditions which necessitated these specific relief efforts, as well has her philosophy and views on this charitable work. Dr. Esther Pohl Lovejoy (1869-1967) was an American physician and public health pioneer, and a suffrage activist. In 1907, she became the first woman appointed to direct a department of health in a major U.S city (Portland, Oregon). She was the second woman to graduate from the University of Oregon Medical School, and the first to practice medicine. Later in life, in 1951 and 1957, she was awarded the Elizabeth Blackwell Medal by the American Medical Women's Association in for contributions to the field of medicine. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. 1st Edition. Doubleday Doran & Co., New York. 1928. 581 pages. First edition stated, first printing. RARE original DJ with $5.00 price intact on flap. Book is tight. Binding and hinges are strong and sound. Pages and endpapers are bright and clean. Burgundy cloth-covered panels are clean with minimal soiling, if any. Tiny dent along bottom edge of rear panel. The rare DJ is present. DJ shows soiling, stains, and toning. A large open chip at heel that reflects on lower front. The point that any part of the DJ is present at all is an achivement as the se just dont exist; they've all dried out and crumbled away. So despite the obvious large open chip, it is still desirable thanks to its rarity. This book was priced at $5.00 in 1928, when the average annual salary was about thirty dollars, so you can imagine not too many people were splurging for it. However, this has no reflection on the book's incredible content. The book presents thirty essays on thirty industries, written by thirty titans of industry, per their respective fields.
