Fresh off a promotion and brand-new to Vietnam when he was unceremoniously given command of Bravo Company, the worst fighting unit in the 25th Battalion, Captain Robert Hemphill had to prove his courage and skill as a commander over the next five months--taking Bravo into an endless series of search and destroy missions, reacting to midnight mortar attacks and ambushed, and trying desperately to not only keep his men alive, but also keep sane in the madness of Vietnam. Then, just when Hemphill was getting the hand of it, the NVA unleashed their 1968 Tet offensive, and Bravo was plunged into the mos t horrific fighting of the war. From the days of immense boredom to electrifying, toe-to-toe battled with the NVA, this riveting account at last tells the real story of Platoon." - Publisher ; wine-red cloth with gold lettering, in color pictorial dustjacket ; crease on front ep ; slight wear to dustjacket ; triffle dusty ; G/VG. Henry; Title drawings and initial letters by Wm. Kay; Binding by Commercial Bindery." An autobiographical account by Thomas Jefferson Farnham (1804-1848), an American explorer and author. Foreword by Joseph A. Sullivan. Farnham took part in many historical events in the early days of the American West. He traveled the Oregon Trail and led a group of men, the Oregon Dragoons, to rendezvous with Jason Lee at his mission in Willamette Valley. After spending time in Oregon, Farnham set sail for Hawai'i. He later returned to the mainland and landed in Monterey, Alta California. There, he helped secure the release of American and British prisoners led by Isaac Graham (1800-1863), an American fur trader and mountain man, who had assisted Juan Alvarado and Jose Castro in their coup against the Mexican Governor of Northern California, Nicolas Gutierrez. However, once Alvarado became the new Mexican Governor, he and Castro turned on Graham and his men and accused them of conspiring against the Mexican government. Graham and his men were subsequently arrested in 1840 and sent to San Blas and then Tepic, Mexico for trial and imprisonment. The prisoners were subject to torture and abuse including being housed in unsanitary environments and deprived of food and water to the point of starvation. Sadly, some of the prisoners died from the ordeal. The remaining prisoners were eventually released about one year later. This entire series of events became known as the Graham Affair. In this book, Farnham begins his narrative in Oregon. He then describes his travels to Hawai'i via ship and the time he spent there. Farnham relays an account by one of the wives of Kamehameha I who describes Captain Cook and his betrayal of the Hawai'ian people, King Kamehameha (III?), and George Vancouver. Farnham also describesthe evangelical movement in Hawai'i. Much of Farnham's book is about Alta California and the Graham Affair. He writes about the Graham Affair from his point of view and retells the firsthand accounts of some of the prisoners on their harrowing journey from Alta California to Tepic. Farnham discusses many other subjects relating to California history such as the missions, presidios, local scenery, and natural resources.…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. One of 500 copies printed. "500 copies printed by Times-Star Press--Alameda, Calif.; Harold Jones--Marc Schowalter--Bettis Shaw" printed on copyright page. Original publisher's red cloth binding with gilt lettering on spine. 6 1/2" x 9 1/2." 124 pages, complete. Index in back. No. 42 of the California Relations series. Pages are very clean and intact except for light age toning. Covers are clean and intact except for slight darkening and discoloration along spine, some stains along front and back outer joints, and general fading. Binding is somewhat loosened but still strong and holding. A Very Good, almost Near Fine copy. This is a fascinating autobiographical account by James L. Tyson, an American physician who departed from Baltimore, Maryland to California in 1849 at the height of the California Gold Rush. Two of the main reasons he traveled to California were to become familiar with California diseases and ailments, specifically those commonly found among miners, and to find a prospective location for permanent settlement. In his Introductory Chatper, Tyson gives brief but diverse advice about traveling to California and how to take care of one's health on the journey. He argues that many of the miners' illnesses came from ignorance or negligence. Among his medical advice is to limit time in the purportedly unhealthy environment of Chagres, avoiding eating too much local fruit, limiting work hours, avoiding an all-meat diet, and eating stewed fruits or vegetables. Tyson recounts many events from his journey on both land and sea. Among the subjects and events he describes in his narrative are the dangerous environs of Chagres, his observations of and opinions about Indigenous Peoples, natural scenery, Panama, the Isthmus of Darien, Panama fever, an extinct volcano, a boa constrictor, fruits, sicknesses and death at sea, the changing state of the weather and ocean, marine wildlife, Guatemalan coast, Oaxacan coast, Lower California, Cape Palmas, Cape St. Lucas, provisional shortages, incompetent captains, Alta California, landing in San Francisco, Benicia, Sausalito, crime in California, desertion of crew members, city of Sacramento, gold miners, Sutter's Fort, American River, California wildlife, illnesses of miners, California Indigenous Peoples, Tyson's attempt to establish a tent-hospital, the Sierra Nevada, Oregonians taking part in the Gold Rush, Santa Barbara, Mazatlan, Tyson tending to patients, Gulf of Tehuantepec, Jamaica, and New York. The red cloth spine has a paper label that is in mostly clean condition - there is a small ding to the top front corner and the lable has noticeable toning. The text pages are clean and bright. "Tiburcio Vásquez was born in Monterey, Alta California, Mexico (present-day California, United States) on April 11, 1835, to José Hermenegildo Vásquez and María Guadalupe Cantúa. In accordance with Spanish tradition, Vásquez's birth was celebrated on the saint's feast day of his namesake, St. Tiburtius; thus, he always referred to his birthday as August 11, 1835. His great-grandfather came to Alta California with the De Anza Expedition of 1776. He grew up in a moderately well-off, middle-class family who owned land, granted to them by the Mexican government, due to his father's military service as a Spanish soldier. He spent plenty of time on his father's and his Uncle Felipe Vásquez's ranchos, learning the skills of ranching. He was noted as excellent in marksmanship and horsemanship from a young age. Vásquez was slightly built, and about 5 feet 7 inches (170 cm). " (from Wikipedia).…
