A woodcut comes before each eclogue, and then a motto which outlines the speaker. The opening line of each eclogue expresses the characteristics of the month. The poem describes the seasons and the hard work and the festivals and rituals of the village year. Birds, flowers, and harvests are described by Edmund Spenser as well as the privations and hardship. ***Paul Fourdrinier (1698-1758), also known as Peter or Pierre Fourdrinier, was an eighteenth-century engraver in England, born in the Netherlands. ***The second post-Elizabethan edition.
