Octavo, blue cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, x, 295 pp. Very Good, with darkened spine and light edgewear. From Preface: The author, while collecting materials in Great Britain for The Anti-Slavery Movement in England, A Study in English Humanitarianism, covering the years from 1770 to 1833, became convinced that a further analysis of earlier sources of humanitarian opinion was clearly indicated. The development of the eighteenth century humanitarian mood was not in itself sufficient to explain great reservoirs of sentiment favorable to the protection of native peoples. Organized ameliorative activities, even if originally at least partially a product of the new mood, obviously in turn intensified humanitarian sentiments and made effective action possible. Outstanding among such humanitarian bodies were the older Anglican missionary socieities, founded at the opening of the eighteenth century. The richness of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel records for historical purposes, British as well as American, was first stressed by Professor Charles M. Andrews in the American HIstorical Review, in an article entitled, "Materials in British Archives for American Colonial History," which appeared in January, 1905. And three years later, the value of religious records for the study of "the broad story of American culture," and "a full understanding of American character and spriti," was ably stated by the late Dr. J. Franklin Jameson in a presidential address, "The American Acta Sanctorium," which was published in the American Historical Review in January, 1908.
