Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. I don't know why this book talks about "novellas"; it comprises forty-six short stories, some of them very short - no more than three or four pages. Whatever. First published in Munich in an edition translated from Chinese to German, and compiled by two Professors of sinology, Bauer and Franke. This is the first English language edition, translated from the German by Christopher Levenson with the help and advice of the great orientalist, Arthur Waley. So, if it's true that things get lost in translation, they may be doubly lost here! No matter. The stories read just fine - entertaining and flowing. There's a lengthy and scholarly Introduction by Prof Franke, a list of sources and notes at rear, and each story has a Chinese woodcut as illustration. A near fine copy in very good dust jacket, with one chip from top of front panel, and darkened spine. MC.
