Nach der Ablehnung des ihm angebotenen Außenministeriums zog er sich 1801 ins Privatleben zurück, widmete sich u. a. wohltätigen Aufgaben und gehörte 1815-26 bei der Neuordnung der Innenpolitik zu den engsten Beratern Metternichs. - Rudolf Rt. von Vivenot gründete 1848 den Konstitutionell-monarchistischen Verein"; als sich die angestrebte Gründung einer patriotischen Partei nicht verwirklichen ließ, zog er sich jedoch aus der aktiven Politik zurück.
