Title page is darkened, and moisture tide marks are seen on the first half of the leaves. Text and images remain clear. A typed note is laid in from bookseller Bob Marsh of Topeka, Kansas circa 1960s in which he states that this copy is a variant edition, being complete with the above stated portions. At the time of this writing, I have been unable to substantiate this (and would welcome any further information). Complete in original binding except for the gigantic map which is available in full size color thick glossy paper professional reproduction ($25 extra if desired). Pagination: 583 pages, 22 plates, 4 maps, all blanks present. Includes fascinating pencil diagram of oil rig on back of map. Oil rig drawing titled "Sheffield Oil Company. Warren(?), Co., Pa." That pencil drawing is the only interior writing or ownership marking anywhere in the book. Condition is a mixed bag. Original half leather marbled boards show heavy wear and looks like they were professionally rehinged in the distant past. Binding is sound. Pages show moderate to heavy toning and foxing. Some plates have weird 'dot' foxing I have never seen elsewhere (see scan). Marbled endpapers. A nice well maintained copy suitable for reading and research with a cool drawing. Note: the large map published in 1845 was the road map people used in the gold rush of 1849. It was routinely extracted hence its rare nature. Map is 52 x 32 inches. Referenced as no. 115:4 in Wagner-Camp-Becker. Pages are clean and intact overall but are fragile and age-toned with occasional chips at the edges. A few pages appear to have some repairs. Covers have slight wear to the corners and edges, some rubbing to front and back, and a surface chip on the back. Binding is tight. A Very Good copy. John C. Fremont (1813-1890) was an American explorer, politician, and military officer. This report covers Fremont's first expedition to the Rocky Mountains in 1842 and his following expedition in 1843-1844 to Oregon and California. His main mission for the first expedition was to survey the Wind River of the Rockies, the Oregon Trail in the Rockies' South Pass, and the lands in Wyoming. During his second expedition, Fremont explored other western regions and visited places such as the Great Salt Lake, the Snake River, the Columbia River, the Cascades, Mount St. Helens, Mt. Hood, the Sierra Nevada, Lake Tahoe, the American River, and Sutter's Fort in present-day Sacramento, California.…

Fremont's first expedition to the Rockies was designed by his father-in-law, Sen. Thomas Hart Benton, to publicize the overland route to Oregon. Dale Morgan found the manuscript of the report in the War Department records of the National Archives. Although unable to locate any of Fremont's manuscript journals, Morgan found the financial records of the 1842-45 expeditions in the old files of the General Accounting Office." The letter of transmittal preceding the title page has the following title: "27th Congress, 3d Session. [Senate.] [243] Report from the Secretary of War, Communicating, in compliance with a resolution of the Senate, a copy of Lieut. Fremont's report of his Exploring Expedition to the Rocky Mountains. March 2, 1843. Read, and ordered to be printed. March 3, 1843. Ordered, That nine hundred additional copies be furnished for the use of the Senate, and one hundred copies for the use of the Topographical Bureau." Within the letter of transmittal, J. J. Abert, Colonel Corps of Topographical Engineers, writes, "I have the honor to transmit the report and map of an exploring expedition to the Rocky Mountains, made during the last summer, under the orders of the Department, by Lieut. J. C. Fremont, of the Corps of Topographical Engineers, and which was called for by a resolution of the Senate of the 21st of last December. The plates and pages are foxed, and there are sporadic tidemarks of varying sizes on the pages as well. 22 single-sided plates (views, botanical, fossils) and 3 maps (missing the large folding map by Charles Preuss, and the map at p. 247). John Fremont's expeditions of 1842 and 1843-44 were the most spectacular reconnaissance of the American West since Lewis and Clark. Performed under the auspices of the Army Bureau of Topographical Engineers, the expedition's published reports and maps brought a factor of dependability and trustworthiness that would aid American settlement of the West. Fremont's report was the most detailed observations of the western territories at the time. The country covered by the report was previously terra incognito--Brigham Young is said to have used both the report as a guide in bringing the Mormon people West. Lots of wear to the spine panel, rear joint cracked; the cloth rubbed along the edges and especially at the tips; moderate foxing throughout, gatherings 9 and 14 badly foxed but legible, one gathering slightly pulled; a few gatherings darkened; three pages with tears at one corner with some loss, about a dozen letters from each of two pages and about 8 words from another; some inserted plates lightly foxed; the large Preuss map, 52 x 32 1/2 inches folded to 5 1/4 x 8 1/2, with three chips at the top edge - about 12 of the 33 places where the folds cross with small tears.
