De auteurs behandelen onder meer de middeleeuwse kerk, Reformatie en Opstand, de ontwikkeling van protestantse stromingen en het rooms-katholicisme, kerkelijke verdeeldheid, verzuiling en de positie van de kerken in de moderne samenleving. De historische ontwikkeling wordt rijk geïllustreerd met foto's, prenten, portretten, documenten en afbeeldingen in kleur en zwart-wit. Een toegankelijk cultuur- en kerkhistorisch overzicht dat tevens een karakteristiek tijdsdocument vormt over de wijze waarop aan het einde van de jaren zeventig naar de religieuze geschiedenis van Nederland werd gekeken. De uitgave telt 127 pagina's en verscheen in 1979 bij Amsterdam Boek.
