This volume is the first lengthy publication devoted to this striking personality whose significance was no less than that of his contemporaries Abraham Geiger and David Einhorn.En route from Thalfang via Dessau and Luxembourg to Philadelphia, Hirsch left his mark on societal, religious, and philosophical developments in manifold ways. By the time he was appointed Chief Rabbi of the Jewish community in Luxembourg in 1843, he had already written many of his most important works on the philosophy of religion. In them he engaged in debate with the Young Hegelians on the importance of Judaism, the religion that, more than any other, enabled the human actualization of freedom so central to Hegel's philosophy.Over time Hirsch took an increasingly radical stance on issues such as Jewish rituals and mixed marriage. The goal of his reforms was not assimilation. He strove to strengthen Judaism to meet the demands of modernity and enable its survival in the modern era.Hirsch's story is key to understanding the transnational history of Reform Judaism and the struggle of Jews to secure a place in history and society.

Aggiungi al carrelloAmsterdam, Menasseh ben Israel Instituut, 2017. 115 pp. New. Paperback. The art of writing about Jewish History has a long history itself, and is still developing. The three articles in this issue of Menasseh ben Israel Institute Studies, written by prominent theoreticians of Jewish Historiography, discuss the origins of the writing about Jewish History, its development and change in the light of societal and academic debates on history writing. Andreas Gotzmann discusses how a 'minority'-perspective has led Jewish historiography to remain a conservative endeavor. Klaus Hödl argues that mainstream historiography, in adhering to unqualified notions of assimilation and acculturation, has ignored popular culture and hampered our understanding of the interactive nature of Jewishness. Wim Klooster traces the consequences for Jewish Historiography in the wake of new research into the Atlantic World in the 17th and 18th centuries. Their new perspectives on Jewish Historiography will be of interest to all interested in Jewish History writing, whether scholarly or popular.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The widespread and long-held preconception that all Jews lived in ghettos and were relentlessly subject to discrimination prior to the Enlightenment has only slowly eroded. Geographically speaking, Jews rarely lived in ghettos and have never been confined within the borders of one nation or country. Power struggles and wars often led to the creation of new national borders that divided communities once united. But if identity formation is subject to change and negotiation, it does not depend solely on shifting geographical borders. A variety of boundaries were and are still being constructed and maintained between ethnic and other collective identities. The contributors to this book, like other post-modernist historians, turn their gaze to a wide range of identities once taken for granted, identities located on the border lines between one country and the next, between Jews and non-Jews as well as on those between one group of Jews and another. This text challenges the long-held misconception that Jews historically lived exclusively in ghettos and faced constant discrimination before the Enlightenment, emphasizing that geographically, Jewish communities rarely existed in ghettos and extended beyond single national boundaries.
