All edges marbled although with top edge quite darkened. Marbled endpapers; relatively modern ownership label at front pastedown's top left; mot recent owner's (Mississippi State University professor E. Jerry Vardaman) personal bookplate affixed upon front free endpaper. Bookseller/binder pencil notes on ffep verso which also has circular winged horse logo ink stamp "Bound by Mudie" at bottom center; associated pencil notation on rfep recto as well; interior leaves are otherwise clean. Aggiungi al carrelloAlthough it does not state so explicitly, Froude's entry in the Oxford DNB appers to suggests that the Margaret Froude who edited his work after his death was the same daughter as the Georgina Margaret Froude (1850-1935) who married William Mallock. 1p, 12mo. On first leaf of a bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. The reci…pient is not named. Addressed to 'Dear Madam' and signed 'Margaret Froude'. She cannot alter the opinion that she expressed to 'Mr Longman' (the London publisher). She considers it 'unjust to an author to quote passages without their context which, when standing alone are unworthy of his other writings'. The writings of 'Mr. Carlyle' are 'full of beautiful passages relative to your subject', and she hopes it will be easy for the recipient to find 'others to take the place of the two to which I take exception'.

"I want very much to have five or six pages on the Reform debate and the division - whatever that is.in the May number of Frasers. It should be written by some one who has heard the speeches and taken part in the passions of this situatio…n. Will you write it.I ought to say I go along with the spirit of I think Lord Grosvenor (word obliterated by smudging when the ink was wet). Froude says he can have three days to write it if it's going to make the May number. Froude was editor of Fraser's Magazine from 1861-74; George Otto Trevelyan (1838-1928 was a Member of Parliament from 1865-1888; Hugh Lupus Grosvenor (1825-1899) was an M.P. from 1847-69. The "passions of the situation" must have been the occurrence in Parliament two days prior to this letter - April 16, 1866 - when Grosvenor ".played a pivotal role in bringing down the Liberal government over their reform bill." (from the online "Victorian Commons"). The new government was able to pass the "Reform Bill of 1867", which broadly expanded the franchise to the common man. Faint mounting stains on the last page, a blank except for an ink "J.A. Franks" - someone couldn't decipher Froude's hasty signature.

This epistolary novel is a narrative of the loss of faith of a young student at Oxford, who, like Froude, had been subject to Tractarian influence (DNB). "A most important religious novel.this is the novel that… William Sewell.a fierce Tractarian, burned in the college quadrangle as indecent" (Wolff). The incident ".created a large demand for the book, and a second edition was published in the same year" (DNB). Froude, having written to Emerson for advice, and following his friend Arthur Hugh Clough, resigned his fellowship at Oxford, having resented the insistence of the Tractarians that he follow their dogma. Bound without ads at the back; the last two leaves (L7,8, blanks) have been roughly excised; other copies were bound without these leaves. Cocked, worn at spine ends, 1/4 inch of the cloth at the top is gone, with most of "The" gone with it. A bookplate roughly removed from the front endpaper, two recent ownership signatures. Two gatherings starting. A Good copy.

A presentation copy, on the front free end…paper in ink: "A.H. Clough. / with J.A.F' kindest regards." Under this in pencil in an unknown hand, "presented by Mr. Clough / 1849". Two corrections are made by Froude in ink, on pages 95: "feebly" for "fully" and on page 157, adding "And we never shall know which is true until we know what motion is". In a back and forth in letters (see Mulhauser, The Correspondence of Arthur Hugh Clough, v.1), Feb. 26, 1849, to Thomas Arnold, "I have not yet seen the said book -- the Nemesis of Faith."; Feb. 28, 1849, Froude to Clough, "If I knew how to send you a copy I would. If you buy it, please remember that I have made an unfortunate omission in a sentence.You will find it about half way through, and supply at the tail.'and we never shall know which is true till we know what motion is'. In the second edition, also 1849, both mistakes were corrected.

Written in a hurried hand, with the meaning unclear in parts. The letter would appear to discuss the republican and Carlist insurrections against Amadeo I, the only King of Spain from the House of Savoy, who re…placed the deposed Isabella II in 1870, and reigned until 1873. Froude begins by explaining that his silence has been due to the fact that he has been 'out of town for the Summer'. He is extremely sorry to have missed Sellars, as he 'must have much to say of extreme interest'. The letter continues: 'The State of Spain is the reductio ad asbsurdum of the nonsense about the rights of man which has been preached in our ears for a Century | England after being Gladstonized is only not as Spain because she has trained for many long ages in another school. And we shall be as Spain unless we open our eyes.' He fears that Sellars himself 'will have suffered seriously, & there is no immediate prospect of a change for the better.' The passage that follows is not entirely clear, but appears to read: 'I am growing to hope that the mountaineers will [as?] at any rate thrash the café haunting armies playing Bull fight [hanging?] rascals that have been the scandal & torment of the Country.' The letter concludes: 'Whatever happens afterwards we shall be in London in September. I hardly know whether or no to hope that we shall find you there'.

His handling of it was widely excoriated from both sides of the Atlantic; indeed, Charles Eliot Norton was stimulated to publish his own redacted version in 1887. The "Letters and Memorials of Jane Welsh Carlyle, Prepared for Publication by Thomas Carlyle", edited by Froude, was published in about late March, 1883 (Tarr, p.471).
