Black and white illustrations, references, glossary, index. [From Preface] This is an attempt to supply the popular, as well as the scientific, demand for discrimination between our Pacific Coast ferns. The amateur collector, many tourists, scout groups, gardeners and general lovers of plants want something which distinguishes simply and at the same time associates things of interest with the species. The demand is not sufficient to warrant separate books for the scientist and the amateur. Further there is no clear line between the amateur and the taxonomic botanist; however the more scientific and detailed portion has been separated from the remainder by the smaller type. The states covered are Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. Naturally not all the localities where species have been gathered are mentioned; it seems unnecessary. Also it is more full for the western portion of the area covered because the writer is better acquainted with that region. References to literature are given in the body of the work by numbers in parentheses. These refer to a list just before the index. It is not an exhaustive list; in fact a complete bibliography seems unwieldly in so small a work. Curative properties should not be taken too seriously. Very many of the cures of several centuries ago are no longer practiced, and we now know that some have no virtue except the element of faith in the physician. They are, however, interesting from an historical or anthropological standpoint. . .
