Soft cover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: None, As Issued. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 120 pages. Published in 1988. The author's account on Postwar Germany. One of the most important - and most beautiful - books on its subject of the 20th century. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United State…s. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, of which there are several, particularly the 2011 American Edition, issued thirteen years later. Published in a small and limited first print run as a softcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Stig Dagerman's "Tysk Host" in a felicitous English translation. Robin Fulton, the translator, has also contributed an insightful Introduction. "In late 1946, Stig Dagerman was assigned by the Swedish newspaper Expressen to report on life in Germany immediately after the Fall of the Third Reich. A collection of the essays written for the assignment, 'German Autumn' was unlike any other reportage at the time" (Publisher's blurb). While most people believed that the German people deserved their fate (with understandable and sufficient justification), Stig Dagerman reported instead on the humanity of the men and women ruined by the war, their guilt, and their suffering. "German Autumn" established him as a compassionate journalist and has led to the enduring influence of his book. "What would it be like to have to stay behind, to have to be hungry every day, to have to sleep in a cellar, to have to fight at every moment against the temptation to steal, to have to tremble with cold every minute, to have to survive, constantly, the most intractable conditions?" (Stig Dagerman). His reportage provides some acute answers. Stig Dagerman himself found life, after the Second World War, unbearable: He committed suicide in 1954 at the age of thirty-one, prematurely ending a brilliant literary career and enviable reputation as the most gifted Swedish writer of his generation. An absolute "must-have" title for Stig Dagerman collectors. This title is a late-modern classic. This is one of few copies of the First Edition/First Printing (British) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have very serious flaws or are subsequent printings. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce copy thus. One of the most brilliant writers of the 20th century. A fine copy. ISBN 0704300478. no.
