Editore: Loyal Publication Society?, New York?
Da: Barry Cassidy Rare Books, Sacramento, CA, U.S.A.
No Binding. Condizione: Very Good. Original publisher's beige paper pamphlet. Text printed in black ink. Formerly bound together with other tracts. No date, circa 1863. 5 1/2" x 8 1/2." Forty-five pages, complete. Pages are very clean and intact except for light age toning and glue repair, splitting, and slight chipping along spine. A Very Good copy. This pamphlet is No. 36 in a series of pro-Union articles issued by the Loyal Publication Society of New York. The Society was founded in early 1863 to help boost morale for the Union cause through the circulation of pro-Union pamphlets after the Union had suffered a series of defeats in the American Civil War. This pamphlet contains the printed text of two speeches by Alexander H. Stephens (1812-1883) and Edward W. Gantt (1829-1874). Stephens was a Georgia politician who became the Confederate Vice President. He initially opposed secession of the Southern states. By 1862, Stephens was a vehement opponent of Confederate President Jefferson Davis and vocally criticized his handling of the War. Gantt was a Confederate Brigadier General. Notably, he defected to the Union during the War. Stephens's speech is titled, "The Assertions of a Secessionist." In his speech, Stephens prefaces that he wishes to not offend anyone and wants to appeal to reason instead of emotion. In response to talks asking if the Southern states should secede upon the election of Abraham Lincoln, Stephens emphatically says, "I tell you frankly, candidly, and earnestly, that I do not think that they ought. In my judgment, the election of no man, constitutionally chosen to that high office, is sufficient cause for any State to separate from the Union. It ought to stand by and aid still in maintaining the Constitution of the country. To make a point of resistance to the Government, to withdraw from it because a man has been constitutionally elected puts us in the wrong." Stephens assures his Southern audience that Lincoln's presidential powers are balanced by opposition in both the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate. He explains that nothing of human origin is perfect but believes that the U.S. government is the best in world and comes closest to achieving the "objects of all good governments." He implies that the Union is worth preserving and thus that the South should not secede from it. Stephens addresses other subjects such as the fishing bounties, the Tariff of 1832, Nullification Crisis of South Carolina, and Navigation Laws. Stephens defends his stance that Georgia should not secede bu subsequently appears to give stipulations for that maintaining that view. Stephens then addresses his fellow politicians and affirms his general opposition to Lincoln and the Republican Party. He says with conviction that he will defend Georgia's interests amid talks that the Republicans plan to pass progressive legislation. Stephens appears to say that he will support Georgia's secession if certain laws, such as the one prohibiting slavery in U.S. territories or amendments to fugitive slave laws, are passed. Overall, Stephens is generally against secession and adamantly opposes use of violence but says that should the people of Georgia wish to secede, he will accept their demands because he believes that politicians are servants of the people. Brief interjections by Robert Toombs, another Georgia politician and friend of Stephens, are included. In his speech, Gantt explains his change of heart and support of the Union. He had witnessed, first-hand, the devastation of the South and numerous calamities and deaths that had befallen Southerners. Gantt adamantly states that the Confederacy is in ruins and argues that its surrender is the best option. He decries the crimes committed by Jefferson Davis, Confederate officers Hindman, Johnson, and Holmes, and others against the very people they were supposed to protect, the Southern people. Gantt describes Davis as an incompetent tyrant who only wanted to help his elite friends, not the people.

Gantt details the Confederate Party's atrocities in Arkansas under the leadership of Hindman and the Johnsons. He describes a reign of plunder, oppression, and the loss of Indian territory, all while the Confederate leadership turned a blind eye or actively encouraged it. The author resigned his commission in protest and calls on his fellow Arkansans to lay down their arms and seek peace. He implores them to accept the futility of the struggle and the devastation it has brought upon the South. Gantt's insights into the brutality and corruption of the Confederate military in Arkansas offer a unique perspective on the conflict and highlight the human cost of war. "Gantt, formerly a member of the Confederate Congress and a General in the Southern Army, herein gives the reasons for his renunciation of the cause and of his acceptance and advocacy of Northern domination. The General's apostacy took place following his capture and imprisonment by the Union forces. As a final proof of his complete change of heart, he gives a seriatum account of the 'atrocities' committed by his erstwhile comrades-in-arms in Arkansas and Texas" (Eberstadt).
