La obra estudia uno de los elementos más singulares de la arquitectura renacentista española: el arco de esquina, vinculado a la llegada de los nuevos tiempos, cuyos primeros ejemplos datan de finales del siglo XV, con auge a lo largo del XVI y continuidad durante el XVII. Los maestros artífices de su ejecución realizaron un desafío técnico, formal y compositivo al emplazar huecos en los encuentros entre muros, puntos fundamentales para garantizar la estabilidad de las fábricas. Las esquinas de las tramas de los núcleos urbanos medievales, en los que no era posible disponer fachadas centradas que pudieran ser contempladas desde un punto lejano, se convirtieron en el emplazamiento idóneo para que la clase noble pudiera incluir una pieza arquitectónica con una doble función: por una parte el control visual desde el interior de un mayor ángulo de espacio público; y por otra hacerse aparente desde una visión exterior. Por ello, los arcos de esquina se convirtieron en un elemento a la moda, base de la composición de la fachada, frecuentemente tratado con un programa de ornamentación que diera fe de la capacidad económica y social de los propietarios, que llegaban a rivalizar para poseer en sus palacios el ejemplo más espectacular. Ante los requerimientos de los nobles, los maestros respondieron con su capacidad creativa y pericia, dejando un importante legado del que se conservan más de un centenar de ejemplos, todos ellos diferentes. El presente trabajo afronta todos los aspectos que inciden en la concepción y construcción de estos tipos de arcos, tanto en lo referente a los ejemplos construidos como a los modelos teóricos recogidos en la tratadística.
