SB iii+361pp+appendix xlviii+ index xii., 13 illustrations.Published Price £18 This is a record of the adventurers, buccaneers, buffoons and entrepeneurs who cut a swathe through the heart of the Raj, before and during the golden age of British-ruled India. Some are soldiers - like General Jean-Baptiste Ventura - others merchants, doctors like Martin Honigberger and Josiah Halan, antiquarians like Charles Masson, and native Indian rulers like the great Sikh Ranjit Singh. Some seventy names throng the pages of this enthralling - and sometimes frankly eccentric - book. But not all the adventurers represented here are heroes; one, Col. Alexander Gardiner, is exposed by the authors as a complete cad - who posed as a âvery perfect gentle knightâ but who, as an exhaustive study of the records showed, was in reality a âPrize liar who passed off other menâs adventures as his ownâ and was not above âUndertaking unsavoury duties with which other men entirely refused to have anything to doâ. A gamey read, full of the richness of India.

Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: As New. A tight, clean, and unmarked copy-" Visitors from other planets have long obsessed us. H.G. Wells' War of Worlds spawned a huge wave of speculative fiction but the roots of such fears run deep in our literature, where the mysteries of other cultures have long threatened the familiar and the comfortable. Did aliens build the ancient pyramids, do they live amongst us today? -what happens when they invade? -And are they just the people from the next valley or country or planet? Would it be an inevitable act of aggression, one of assistance and care, or simply a reminder of our paltry existence in a crowded universe? Flame Tree's successful Gothic Fantasy series brings a brilliant new mix of classic and new writing, in this beautiful edition. These new authors appear alongside the following classic and essential writers: George Tomkyns Chesney, George Allan England, Austin Hall, H.P. Lovecraft, A. Merritt, Robert Potter, Garrett P. Serviss, Jonathan Swift, Voltaire, H.G. Wells; along with text from The Taking of Ireland (retold tales from The Book of Invasions).".

"John Stuart Mill (20 May 1806 - 7 May 1873), usually cited as J.S. Mill, was an English philosopher, political economist, and civil servant. One of the most influential thinkers in the history of classical liberalism, he contributed widely to social theory, political theory, and political economy. Dubbed "the most influential English-speaking philosopher of the nineteenth century", he conceived of liberty as justifying the freedom of the individual in opposition to unlimited state and social control. Mill was a proponent of utilitarianism, an ethical theory developed by his predecessor Jeremy Bentham. He contributed to the investigation of scientific methodology, though his knowledge of the topic was based on the writings of others, notably William Whewell, John Herschel, and Auguste Comte, and research carried out for Mill by Alexander Bain. He engaged in written debate with Whewell. A member of the Liberal Party and author of the early feminist work The Subjection of Women, Mill was also the second Member of Parliament to call for women's suffrage after Henry Hunt in 1832.
