Paperback. Condizione: New. Born into the most influential artistic family in Venice, he received his training in the studio of his father, Jacopo, along with his brother, Gentile, and through a long and fruitful career played a leading role in advancing the stylistic transformations of the Italian Renaissance. His workshop, one of the most important of the period, counted Giorgione and Titian among its pupils. Contemporary descriptions of his life, however, are few. The first account, by Vasari, which also portrays the family artistic enterprise, was written decades after his death and offers but qualified praise. A century later Carlo Ridolfi, who sought to rectify Vasari's emphasis on Florentine painters, provides a fuller portrayal of Bellini in his 1648 work The Marvels of Art, or the Lives of the Famous Painters of Venice and Its State. These two narratives are complemented by the correspondence of Isabella d'Este, one of the leading art patrons of the Renaissance, and the prominent man of letters Pietro Bembo, which appear here in English for the first time. An introduction by the scholar Davide Gasparotto provides an illuminating discussion of these texts and Bellini's vast oeuvre. The historical texts are enhanced by a generous selection of colour illustrations.…

This lavishly illustrated coffee-table book features more than one hundred paintings from the J. Paul Getty Museum's extraordinary collection. I am convinced that the true collector does not acquire objects of art for himself alone. His is no selfish drive or desire to have and hold a painting, a sculpture, or a fine example of antique furniture so that only he may see and enjoy it. Appreciating the beauty of the object, he is willing and even eager to have others share his pleasure. -J. Paul Getty, The Joys of Collecting, 1965. Rooted in a passion for the Italian Renaissance as well as Dutch and Flemish Baroque works, the original collection of J. Paul Getty (1892-1976) has been transformed over four decades to include seminal pieces by celebrated masters such as Masaccio, Titian, Parmigianino, Cranach, El Greco, Rubens, van Dyck, Rembrandt, Poussin, Canaletto, Fragonard, Turner, Manet, Degas, Renoir, Monet, van Gogh, Cézanne, and Ensor. Masterpiece Paintings in the J. Paul Getty Museum surveys more than one hundred of the most exquisite and significant paintings displayed in the museum's famed, daylight-suffused galleries. Paperback. Condizione: New. The painting La Surprise by Jean Antoine Watteau (1684-1721) belongs to a new genre of painting invented by the artist himself-the fete galante. These works, which show graceful open-air gatherings filled with scenes of courtship, music and dance, strolling lovers, and actors, do not so much tell a story as set a mood: one of playful, wistful, nostalgic reverie. Esteemed by collectors in Watteau's day as a work that showed the artist at the height of his skill and success, La Surprise vanished from public view in 1848, not to reemerge for more than a century and a half. Acquired by the Getty Museum in 2017, it has never before been the subject of a dedicated publication. Marking the three hundredth anniversary of Watteau's death, this book considers La Surprise within the context of the artist's oeuvre, and discusses the surprising history of collecting Watteau in Los Angeles.…

Paperback. Condizione: New. The northern Italian artist Giacomo Ceruti (1698-1767) was born in Milan and active in Brescia and Bergamo. For his distinctive, large-scale paintings of low income tradespeople and individuals experiencing homelessness, whom he portrayed with dignity and sympathy, Ceruti came to be known as Il Pitocchetto (the little beggar). Accompanying the first US exhibition to focus solely on Ceruti, this publication explores relationships between art, patronage, and economic inequality in early modern Europe, considering why these paintings were commissioned and by whom, where such works were exhibited, and what they signified to contemporary audiences. Essays and a generous plate section contextualize and closely examine Ceruti's pictures of laborers and the unhoused, whom he presented as protagonists with distinct stories rather than as generic types. Topics include depictions of marginalized subjects in the history of early modern European art, the career of the artist and his significance in the history of European painting, and the period discourses around poverty and social support. A detailed exhibition checklist, complete with provenance, exhibition history, and bibliography, provides information critical for the further understanding of Ceruti's oeuvre.…
