With information on the history of the sport, rifles, handguns, ammunition, rules, competition, latest developments, and more. Elgin T Gates (1922 ? 1988) was an American hunter, adventurer, author, and firearms and ammunition technician. Gates was a central person in the development of handgun metallic silhouette shooting, and served as president of the International Handgun Metallic Silhouette Association. During his leadership of IHMSA, Elgin published a newsletter titled The Silhouette. Gates won the Weatherby Big Game Trophy award in 1960. A few years later, when an international jury selected the six greatest living hunters, he was in their ranks, with his selection being heralded with a comment: ?Elgin Gates is considered by many authorities to be the greatest hunter of them all.? He was inducted into the Big Game Hall of Fame in 1978 and a year before his death was recipient of what was often styled the Oscar of handgunning, the Outstanding Handgunner Award.
