The Kam, also known as the Dong, are a minority of 2.5 million people living in three provinces and one autonomous region in central southern China. Their population ranks them as the eleventh largest of China's fifty-five minority nationalities. The Kam people are rice farmers with a flair for carpentry. They speak a language special for its many tones. Besides this, they have a strong singing culture which is perhaps unparalleled throughout the rest of China. The book represents a cooperative effort between Chinese and foreign students. Four Kam professors passed on their knowledge to two Europeans who in turn distilled this knowledge, added their own, and researched a little more. Everything was then ordered into a manuscript intended both to inform and to excite the interest of the English-speaking readers; intended to be objective and scientific on one hand, and sympathetic and interesting on the other. In the conclusion to the book, the authors take a look into the future for the Kam people and their culture.
