Paperback. Condizione: New. Sir William Gell (1777-1836) was a British archaeologist known for his drawings of sites and objects of classical interest. Noting that from the beginning of the excavations at Pompeii in 1748 'to the present day, no [substantial] work has appeared in the English language upon the subject of its domes…tic antiquities', together with architect and fellow countryman John P. Gandy he first published Pompeiana to help detail important findings that had been made by the excavators in the first two decades of the nineteenth century. To this end they provide historical discussion, analysis, and over 75 plates illustrating various points of archaeological interest including, as their subtitle notes, 'the topography, edifices, and ornaments of Pompeii'. Pompeiana is an important work that helped open the excavations to English readers and created further awareness of the treasures of the doomed city, destroyed by an eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE.

The first two volumes are the 1824 New Edition, the third and fourth volumes are the 1832 first edition of the continuation of this scarce set. Complete and collated with all illustrations. First two volume set complete with 80… engravings and 22 vignettes. Second two volume work complete with: 88 plates and 8 vignettes. Both series of Gell's works on Pompeii are rarely offered together. In fine matching contemporary bindngs of full calf, double gilt ruled borders, the spines with raised bands, gilt compartments, each with brown and black lettering pieces. There is some dark staining to the top or bottom of the boards, just showing on the spines but which remain attractive on the shelves nevertheless. Spine bases slight wear.Some scattered spots but generally a clean set internally. The joints and hinges are al secure and all boards are fully attached. Overall a G-Nr VG set.

Sir William Gell was a classical archaeologist is most known for his Pompeiana, which he made drawings on the spot using the camera lucida which allowed for highly accurate representations. His Pompeiana was the foundation for the popular myths of the Victorian age and beyond. It provided the basis for Edward Bulwer Lytton's immensely popular historical novel The Last Days of Pompeii 1834. Front hinge cracked.
