Esta obra es una aproximación a una de las principales figuras literarias del XIX, una mujer excepcional y no demasiado conocida entre nosotros: Felicité du Crest (o Madame de Genlis, como firmaba sus obras). Fue toda una precursora de George Sand (así la consideraba ésta), aunque su forcejeó para abrirse paso en un ámbito dominado por los hombres lo realizó respetando siempre (en la medida en que pudo) los cánones de la conducta aristocrática en que había sido estrictamente educada. De entre las numerosas obras que escribió hemos seleccionado, en primer lugar, el relato magistral que da título al presente libro, La escritora (La femme auteur), redescubierto y reeditado recientemente en Francia: un prodigio de sutileza psicológica y de afirmación de la personalidad femenina. La otra obra seleccionada son sus extraordinarias Memorias, de las que ofrecemos un amplio extracto centrado en los pasajes que afectan a sus éxitos literarios y sus relaciones con grandes escritores de la época (Voltaire, Rousseau, etc. ), así como sus agitadas vivencias durante los difíciles tiempos del fin de la monarquía y la Revolución Francesa. Madame de Genlis fue hija de una familia de la nobleza provinciana borgoñona. Al fallecer su padre se vio reducida con su madre y hermanos a un estado de casi pobreza. Su progenitora, empero, logró introducir a su hija gran intérprete musical, con una prodigiosa memoria y una cultura enciclopédica- en los salones de los poderosos de la época, en donde fue muy solicitada como intérprete de arpa. Casada en 1763 con el conde de Genlis, pudo acceder a la Corte de Versalles, entrando al servicio de la Casa de Orleans. Con el advenimiento de la Revolución debió exiliarse. Su marido fue guillotinado tras oponerse abiertamente, en el Parlamento, a la ejecución del rey. En 1801, Napoleón Bonaparte la autorizó a regresar a Francia, viviendo a partir de aquí de los beneficios que le reportaban sus numerosísimas obras, novelas, obras teatrales o tratados sobre temas morales o pedagógicos, hasta su fallecimiento, a la tardía edad de 84 años. *** Nota: Los envíos a España peninsular, Baleares y Canarias se realizan a través de mensajería urgente.
