Palmerston North is one of New Zealand's larger inland cities and this history of its development from the first European exploration in the 1840s, with pioneerr settlers gradually taking up land in the area, which was involved in much dispute and negotiation with the Maori. Thus it was not until the 1870s that formal local government was introduced to the Manawatu region, of which Palemerston North developed as the major centre. In Petersen's excellent centennial history of this centre the progress of the greater Manawatu area is an integral component, so his work also takes in much regional history. The introduction consists an outline of the geological and landforms of the Manawatu by Norman Whatman. Subject matter for the 21other chapters include the pre-European background, the land disputes, industries, transport including railway construction, local government and civic affairs and Palmerston North's university city status. A fine example of a well compiled and illustrated local history. 254 pages including bibliography, index, 90 b/w illustrations, mainly photos, some art etc, five maps or plans, decorated e/papers.
