Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. In this bold volume, George van Kooten reevaluates the dating of the Gospels, situates them anew in their first-century context, and shows why their message still resonates today. In Reverberations of Good News, George van Kooten brings the Gospels to life by situating them in the vibrant, complicated world of the first century. Far from being abstract religious writings, the Gospels are presented here as urgent responses to the real pressures of Roman occupation, Jewish identity, and Greek thought.Van Kooten shows how each Gospel--Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John--was crafted for specific audiences facing distinct challenges, whether confronting imperial power, reimagining ancient traditions, or engaging philosophical questions. As part of this project, van Kooten argues that the Gospel of John may actually be the earliest Gospel, not the latest. In so doing, he turns conventional wisdom on its head and opens up new ways of understanding Christianity's origins.By illuminating what the Gospels meant to first-century audiences, Reverberations of Good News invites readers to reflect more deeply on what the narratives mean today. Pastors preparing sermons, students seeking to understand the Bible's cultural and historical context, and anyone curious about Christianity's foundational narratives will come away with new insight into why the story of Jesus was--and continues to be--good news. Such is the bold claim of this study in which scholars from contemporary continental philosophy, new testamentary studies and ancient philosophy discuss with each other the meaning Paul's terms pistis, faith. In this volume, this theme discusses in detail the threefold relation between Paul and (1) continental thought, (2) the Graeco-Roman world, and (3) political theology. It is shown that pistis does not only concern a mode of knowing, but rather concerns the human ethos or mode of existence as a whole. Moreover, it is shown that the present-day political theological interest in Paul can be seen as an attempt to recuperate Paul's pistis in this comprehensive sense. Finally, an important discussion concerning the specific ontological implications and background of this reinterpretation of pistis is examined by comparing the ancient ontological commitments to those of the present-day philosophers. Thus, the volume offers an insight in a crucial consonance of ancient and modern thought concerning the question of pistis in Paul while not forgetting to stipulate important differences.

In Reverberations of Good News, the Gospels are brought vividly to life as cultural, political, and spiritual responses to the world of the first century. Rather than offering a detached or purely historical analysis, this book explores how Mark, Matthew, Luke, and John each articulate Jesus' message in strikingly different ways - through inner renewal, radical justice, peaceful subversion and a bold claim to truth. With fresh insight into the dating, authorship and purpose of the Gospels, George van Kooten challenges familiar assumptions and invites readers to see these texts as dynamic responses to real-world tensions. Bridging ancient context and modern meaning, this book is essential reading for preachers, students, and scholars alike- anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the Gospels as living texts that continue to shape lives and societies.BLOGPOST: Read an extract on who the Magi were and why they travelled on the SCM Press blog here.

This book is the fruit of the first ever interdisciplinary international scientific conference on Matthew's story of the Star of Bethlehem and the Magi, held in 2014 at the University of Groningen, and attended by world-leading specialists in all relevant fields: modern astronomy, the ancient near-eastern and Greco-Roman worlds, the history of science, and religion. The scholarly discussions and the exchange of the interdisciplinary views proved to be immensely fruitful and resulted in the present book. Its twenty chapters describe the various aspects of The Star: the history of its interpretation, ancient near-eastern astronomy and astrology and the Magi, astrology in the Greco-Roman and the Jewish worlds, and the early Christian world at a generally accessible level. An epilogue summarizes the fact-fiction balance of the most famous star which has ever shone. Cover illustration: (c) Michael Farrell".
