Both volumes are handsomely bound in green cloth with gilt and black ornamentation. "Mosses" has a small hold on the endpaper; "A Study" has wear at the corners, the front hinge i…s just starting to crack (but holding well) , and a small round sticker on the endpaper.

Unbound. Condizione: Very Good. Two pages (of a single folded leaf) dated 17 February 1889 from the Hotel Bartholdi in New York to J.M. Stoddard. Folded as mailed, a bit of soiling, slight indication in margins that it was tipped into a book, sound and very good. In a slightly truculent letter, Lathrop includes an outline of a n…ovel (not present) to publisher Stoddard: "It seems rather a waste of time to send it, because I don't think you can form much of an idea of the novel from this outline. My price for 50,000 words would be $1250, & for 40,000 words would be $1000." A prolific author and editor, the Hawaiian-born Lathrop was married to the daughter of Nathaniel Hawthorne.
