Paperback. Condizione: Very Good minus. First edition. This issue lacks the back cover. A single complete original issue with front cover and ads. Quarto, 9 3/4" tall, illustrated wraps, approx. 160 pages + ads. An otherwise very good, clean, sturdy issue of this key literary magazine of its age, with minor shelf wear, rubbing and chipping at the spine corners. BUT, the primary defect is that the back cover is missing--covers were issued oversized to the interior stock and thus the edges appear roughed, but this is true of all copies for the same reason; interior binding tight, paper lightly yellowed.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. Handsome 1909 hardcover volume from The Young Folks' Treasury, this being Volume VII: Heroes and Patriots. The series was overseen by Hamilton Wright Mabie with contributions and advisory involvement from prominent cultural figures of the era - among them Nicholas Murray Butler, Theodore Roosevelt, Grover Cleveland, Henry Van Dyke, Lyman Abbott, and Jacob Riis. This volume presents biographical narratives designed for young readers, including Nathan Hale, Toussaint L'Ouverture, Andreas Hofer, Philip of Pokanoket, Lord Nelson, and Admiral Farragut, as well as accounts of the Defense of Leyden, Washington at Valley Forge, The Revenge, the Albemarle, and The Monitor's Great Fight. Illustrated throughout, including a striking color plate of Joan of Arc (after Ingres) with its tissue guard present. Condition: Very Good. Original tan patterned cloth with gilt-and-green pictorial stamping, mildly rubbed. Spine shows gentle darkening and light wear to extremities; corners softened. Decorative Art Nouveau endpapers intact, though front hinge shows mild cracking; text block remains tight. Pages evenly toned but clean, no writing or marks observed. Illustrations bright and well-preserved. Rear board with faint shelf soil. Edition/Printing Details: Copyright 1909 by The University Society. No later impressions noted, consistent with first printing of this volume in the 12-volume set (issued 1908-1912). Publisher's original decorative binding; multiple plates including color. Tissue guard present. Hamilton Wright Mabie (1846-1916) was an influential American essayist, critic, and editor whose work shaped children's literature and general readership at the turn of the 20th century. A longtime associate editor of The Christian Union (later The Outlook), Mabie became known for his polished literary style and for championing accessible, morally uplifting literature. He edited numerous anthologies, including The Young Folks' Treasury, and wrote widely on culture, nature, and reading. Mabie was elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters and was admired for bringing literary appreciation to a broad American audience. George Cary Eggleston (1839-1911) was an American author, editor, and journalist best known for his historical writings, memoirs, and works for young readers. A Confederate veteran, he wrote the widely read A Rebel's Recollections as well as a number of boys' adventure stories and historical biographies designed to promote good character and civic understanding. Eggleston served as editor of Hearth and Home and contributed to major periodicals throughout his career. His editorial work on The Young Folks' Treasury reflects his lifelong interest in making history engaging and accessible to young audiences.
