Co…mmencée timidement au début du XXe siècle au Dahomey, actuel Bénin, par des immigrés yoruba du Nigeria, l¿¿uvre baptiste fut renforcée par l¿arrivée des missionnaires américains en 1970. Mais, ce fut la collaboration amorcée à partir de 1989 par de simples membres dévoués du groupe et plus tard par des pasteurs locaux qui assura aux missionnaires un soutien pour la propagation du témoignage baptiste. Cela ne fut pas facile dans un paysage religieux déjà bien fourni avec la présence de la religion endogène, de l¿islam, du catholicisme romain, du protestantisme méthodiste et de bien d¿autres confessions. La nouvelle Église avait donc l¿obligation de bien s¿organiser, de se doter des moyens adéquats, d¿user des méthodes les plus attractives pour s¿implanter. Mais, comme toutes les religions étrangères, provoque un choc culturel qui conduit à des conflits. Ainsi, pour s'affirmer dans le pays le baptisme doit procéder à une inculturation et une restructuration.
