La loro adozione e i loro effetti dipendono non soltanto dalla pressione competitiva dei mercati, ma anche dalle politiche pubbliche e dalla capacità dei territori di tradurre le nuove tecnologie in competenze e innovazione organizzativa. Il capitalismo regionalizzato italiano costituisce così un caso cruciale per comprendere come i contesti socio-istituzionali subnazionali orientino la trasformazione della manifattura, generando percorsi differenziati di digitalizzazione. Basandosi su un'ampia ricerca empirica, il libro introduce il concetto di «sistema regionale della digitalizzazione» per spiegare come imprese, politiche, attori collettivi e capacità istituzionali decentrate sostengano la transizione digitale. Mettendo in discussione i modelli lineari di adozione tecnologica, propone l'idea del «futuro alle spalle»: le configurazioni socio-istituzionali ereditate dal passato possono favorire e, al tempo stesso, vincolare le nuove traiettorie di sviluppo. Attraverso dati statistici e relazionali, interviste e studi di caso, il volume ricostruisce la digitalizzazione della manifattura italiana e i percorsi seguiti da sette regioni, mettendone in luce i limiti: i divari tra territori e imprese, la fragilità del capitale umano e le debolezze del sistema dell'innovazione.
