Soft cover. Condizione: Fine. 1ère Édition. 1st Paperback Edition. « Louis Riel, the fiery Metis leader and founder of Manitoba, continues to excite public interest as one of the most controversial and remarkable figures in Canadian history. "It seems strange to me," writes the author of this biography, "that although most of the books about the history of Canada, or the opening of the West, or the relations of the French- and English-speaking peoples had something to say about Riel, « Louis Riel, the fiery metis leader and founder of Manitoba, continues to excite public interest as one of the most controversial and remarkable figures in Canadian history. "It seems strange to me," writes the author of this biography, "that although most of the books about the history of Canada, or the opening of the West, or the relations of the French- and English-speaking peoples had something to say about Riel, there was no book that attempted to deal seriously with the man whose name was so familiar. Nevertheless interest in Riel has never flagged--perhaps because he was such a strange and pathetic figure, perhaps because he evoked such strong feelings of sympathy or antagonism." George Stanley's Louis Riel is the first fully documented biography of "the prophet of the new world." Destined to remain the single most dispensable source of Riel information for decades to come, it unfolds in full force the stormy life of the rebel leader from his birth in 1844 to his execution in 1885. » Blank Sticker on half-title page.…

Tapa blanda. Condizione: New.

Gilman [1831-1908], the great American educator and founding president of Johns Hopkins University and the Carnegie Institution. VOLUME II: Contributions to Political Science: Including Lectures on the Constitution of the United States and Other Papers. Introduction by Johann Caspar Bluntschli [1808-1881], the noted Swiss scholar of constitutional and international law. Constitutional law, international law, military law and political science are among the primary topics of this collection of writings, essays and speeches, some previously unpublished. One will also find several interesting pieces on educational policy, studies of Washington, Napoleon, Alexander von Humboldt and Barthold Georg Niebuhr and a reminiscence of the Battle of Waterloo. FRANCIS LIEBER [1798-1872] was a prominent political philosopher and who helped lay the foundation for the study of political science in the United States. Renowned for his theory of civil liberty, which combined an appreciation for the English concept of decentralized political institutions with the German idea of an overall national purpose, he bridged the intellectual gap between Europe and America. He is best known for drafting guidelines for the humane conduct of the Union army. One of these, General Orders Number 100 (better known as the "Lieber Code") was adopted by other nations and formed the basis for such international treaties as the Hague Regulations of 1907.A Prussian scholar and political activist, Lieber was imprisoned twice for his liberal activities. He was one of the first university-trained scholars to immigrate to the United States. A scholar of wide interests beyond law and politics, he published studies on economics, statistics, education and penal reform and produced and edited the Encyclopedia Americana, the first work of its kind published in the United States. He was professor of history and political economy at South Carolina College.…
