Il "Vade mecum in tribulatione" è l'opera più celebre del profeta Giovanni di Rupescissa, il frate minore alvergnate che, arrestato nel 1349 e inizialmente detenuto in un carcere dell'ordine francescano, fu poi trasferito in una prigione papale ad Avignone e liberato solo alla vigilia della morte (1366). Nelle sue prigioni Giovanni viene progressivamente a conoscenza dell'intero patrimonio dei testi profetici medievali, che trascrive e interpreta per costruire un sistema previsionale dei tempi finali unitario e coerente. Nei venti brevi capitoli (chiamati "intenzioni") del Vade mecum, il frate fissa i tratti delle imminenti tribolazioni e i modi per non esserne travolti, in attesa del successivo inizio dei mille anni di pace preconizzati nel libro dell'Apocalisse, e riporta attese apocalittiche e profili messianici entro un lessico profetico originale, destinato a notevole fortuna nei secoli successivi, come dimostra la rapida diffusione dell'opera in tutta Europa, sia nella versione originale latina sia nei volgarizzamenti prodotti in sette lingue.
