La cultura della villa veneta, sviluppatasi tra la metà del XV e il XIX secolo, ha trovato nella presenza, nella gestione e nell'uso delle acque una delle sue matrici più significative. Il territorio veneto offriva ampie zone ricche di acque, cui si sono aggiunte tutte le aree originariamente asciutte che il governo della Serenissima ha dotato appositamente, tramite specifici progetti, di acque derivate dai grandi fiumi. Da Andrea Palladio fino a tutto l'Ottocento la captazione dell'acqua e il suo passaggio all'interno del complesso, del giardino, dei broli ha generato il disegno e l'organizzazione tanto delle parti costruite quanto delle aree scoperte, divenendo pertanto elemento di continuità e di interazione forte tra il territorio e la villa. L'acqua condiziona questo rapporto inscindibile e si lega agli aspetti produttivi, funzionali non meno che a quelli decorativi interni al giardino, con le sue vasche, fontane, peschiere, giochi d'acqua e soprattutto con i canali e le rogge che definiscono e delimitano le parti del giardino e del complesso.
