Slight wear to spine, covers & corners. Front & back cover bottom edges slightly damaged. Dustjacket: chipping & tearing to top & bottom margins. Front & back covers somewhat soiled. ; 20.1 x 13.5 x 1.4 cms; 111 pages; Wing Commander Ian Richard Gleed DSO, DFC (3 July 1916 â" 16 April 1943) was a distinguished Royal Air Force (RAF) pilot and flying ace during the Second World War. Born in Finchley, London, Gleed developed an early passion for aviation, learning to fly at the London Aeroplane Club in 1935. He joined the RAF on a short service commission in 1936 and was posted to No. 46 Squadron, flying Gloster Gauntlet biplanes. During the early stages of the war, Gleed served with No. 87 Squadron in France, where he quickly distinguished himself. In May 1940, he achieved ace status by claiming multiple enemy aircraft over just two days. His leadership qualities led to his promotion to Squadron Leader in December 1940, taking command of No. 87 Squadron during the Battle of Britain. Under his command, the squadron played a vital role in defending the UK against German air assaults. In 1942, Gleed authored "Arise to Conquer," a memoir detailing his experiences during the Battle of France and the Battle of Britain. The book provides a vivid account of aerial combat and the challenges faced by RAF pilots during the early years of the war. Promoted to Wing Commander, Gleed later led fighter operations in North Africa. Tragically, on 16 April 1943, he was shot down and killed over Tunisia during a combat mission. His contributions to the war effort were recognized with the Distinguished Service Order and the Distinguished Flying Cross. Gleed's legacy endures as a testament to his bravery and dedication as one of the RAF's notable fighter leaders.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Arise to Conquer, first published in 1942, is author Ian Gleed's account of his service in the Royal Air Force at the beginning of World War II. At the time, Gleed, only 23 years old, was one of the R.A.F.'s most experienced fliers and was immediately given the position of flight commander. Yet, the life of an R.A.F. pilot in the initial months of the war, with experience or not, was not easy: just four months after war had broken out, his Spitfire broke up while flying leaving him falling to earth from 18,000 ft without a plane; fortunately, he still had his parachute. After recovering from his injuries he was transferred to 87 Squadron, based in France, and there shot down two Me-110, one definite Bf 109, another probably Bf 109, two Do 17 bombers, and a shared He 111 bomber. This record, set in two days, made him the fastest R.A.F. pilot to become an ace.Over the course of his service, Wing Commander Ian Gleed DSO, DFC, shot down thirteen enemy planes. He served in both the Battle of France and Battle of Britain. Tragically he lost his life in combat at the age of twenty-six in Tunisia in 1943. This item is printed on demand.
