Second edition of this early work on lithography and lithographic techniques. Engelmann (1788-1839) studied painting and sketching in Paris, but in 1814 he traveled to Munich to study lithography. The following year he founded La Société Lithotypique de Mulhouse, and 1816 he opened his own workshop in Paris. Engelmann is credited with commercializing chromolithography, and throughout his life he produced a large number of lithographs, most notably those for Taylor's 'Voyages Pittoresques et Romantiques dans L'Ancienne France'. Short closed tear to lower margin of first leaf; outer margin of front wrap consolidated with archival paper; two small circular stamps to same, with one additional small stamp to fep; plate 5 is heavily water-spotted; small wrinkle to margin of plate 7; plates lightly foxed, else a sound clean copy of a scarce title. …

First edition of one of the earliest books on lithography and color lithographic printing.
