Apart from detailed inventories, it includes concise historical and historiographical introductions, various regional maps, and an extensive bibliography relating to two centuries of intensive Dutch involvement with the Indian subcontinent and Sri Lanka. Jacket photograph: Depiction of the Haspel van Pouchon: a machine that integrates the unwinding and reeling of silk in one process. The method was adopted by the VOC in 1779, some twenty years after the British and some local merchants had started using it in Bengal. In fact, the VOC had long resisted its introduction, as had many of the silk~producing peasants of Bengal. The Dutch thought the method was too expensive while the peasants detested having one stage in the production of silk taken out of their hands, losing part of their income. As we see Indians and Europeans together resisting the new industrial age, the picture symbolises the last phase of the so~called Age of Partnership.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. How did the Dutch Empire compare with other imperial enterprises? And how was it experienced by the indigenous peoples who became part of this colonial power? At the start of the seventeenth century, the Dutch Republic emerged as the centre of a global empire that stretched along the edges of continents and connected societies surrounding the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. In the Dutch Empire, ideas of religious tolerance and scientific curiosity went hand in hand with severe political and economic exploitation of the local populations through violence, monopoly and slavery. This pioneering history of the early modern Dutch Empire, over two centuries, for the first time provides a comparative and indigenous perspective on Dutch overseas expansion. Apart from discussing the impact of the Empire on the economy and society at home in the Dutch Republic, it also offers a fascinating window into the contemporary societies of Asia, Africa and the Americas and, through their interactions, on processes of early modern globalisation.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. In 1602, the States General of the United Provinces of the Netherlands chartered the first commercial company, the Dutch East India Company, and, in so doing, initiated a new wave of globalization. Even though Dutch engagement in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans dates back to the 16th century, it was the dawn of the 17th century that brought the Dutch into the fold of the general movement of European expansion overseas and concomitant globalization. This volume surveys the Dutch participation in, and contribution to, the process of globalization. At the same time, it reassesses the various ways Dutchmen fashioned themselves following the encounter and in the light of increasing dialogue with other societies across the world. As such, Exploring the Dutch Empire offers a new insight into the macro and micro worlds of the global Dutchman in Asia, Africa and the Americas. The result fills a gap in the historiography on empire and globalization, which has previously been dominated by British and, to a lesser extent, French and Spanish cases.
