En el primero de los textos que componen este volumen el profesor Sobejano relata los hitos de esa amistad y los alterna con fragmentos de los trabajos que ha dedicado a la obra de Ayala a lo largo del tiempo. El segundo de los textos que forman el volumen, ?Lectura de «El Doliente»?, es un análisis estilístico detallado del cuento que Ayala dedicó a Enrique III de Castilla en su libro Los usurpadores. En él, Sobejano lleva a cabo una penetrante indagación en las relaciones entre ficción y realidad histórica, comparando el relato con las fuentes que le sirvieron de inspiración.
