Aggiungi al carrellohardcover. Condizione: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. There is at present no overall history of English and British political thought and literature in the early modern period, although new approaches to the writing of its history have taken shape in the past forty to fifty years; and during that time British political history has itself been subjected to intensive revision. This volume, written by directors of seminars at the Folger Institute Center for the History of British Political Thought in Washington DC, attempts to review the period from the English Reformation to the French Revolution, to suggest new ways of studying the articulation of political consciousness and the conduct of political argument, and to point out the extraordinary intellectual and linguistic richness of the ongoing English and British political debate.

Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Gut. 215 Seiten / p. sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - Boileau has traditionally been regarded as the spokesman of French neo-classicism, but recent scholarship has discounted the importance of neo-classical doctrine in general and of Boileaus particular contribution to it. Modern critical approaches have stressed instead the liveliness and wit of Boileaus poems, his love of language and his passionate temperament. -- Mr Pocock uses these new critical approaches to demonstrate in detail how Boileaus verve, love of contrasts and essentially dramatic imagination animate the major poems. But he also argues that such approaches do not in themselves suffice to explain Boileaus special qualities. Neo-classicism was an important element in the intellectual life of Europe in the most critical period of the decline of Christianity and the rise of rationalism and science. Mr Pocock proposes a reformulation of the traditional view which takes account not only of modern criticism but also of Boileaus commitment to neo-classicism and his embodiment of it in his work. The case is argued in an introductory survey of neo-classical doctrine and a detailed analysis and discussion of L'Art Poetique. -- As an account of Boileaus poetry and its background, and a new synthesis of critical thought about Boileau and his significance, this book will appeal to French specialists and to those interested in European intellectual history, as well as to the student who requires a lively and reliable introduction.
