The author, Shaul Gorddon, was born in Vilnius in July 1881, received a traditional Jewish education as well as a secular one. He studied at the Friedrich Polytec Nikl College in Koln, Germany and graduated with an eng…ineering diploma. He was a Zionist since his youth, an active member of Poaley Zion and in the party's newspaper in Vilna. He was a delegate in the 5th Zionist Congress(The Uganda Congress), sent by Poaley Zion, in Basel and was one of those opp9osed to the Uganda plan. He immigrated to the land of Israel at the nd of 1905. In Yafo he founded an information bureau to instruct immigrants and workers how to work the land and was one of the ounders of the HaPoel HaTzair party. He knew 8 languages and was a regular writer for several newspaperr abroad. He learned Arabic and Turkish and wrote a small book AUTHORNOMY IN LEBANON, which was submitted as evidence before the Peel Commission. Starting 1909 he was a bank manager: Beirut, Safed, Tiberias, Jerusalem. In 1906 he founded Merchantile Bank in Jerusalem and managed it until 1940, Ge was ab avud supporter of teh HaMaccabi movment, the Hagana, helped found the Talpioot neighborhood in JerusalemTranlslated from English, FRench and other languages, including Carlayl's The French Revolution. His hobby was chess. He was a brilliant, modest, beloved man who made great contributions to the state of Israel and his people.
