Does its status as the second independent nation in the hemisphere give it special lessons to teach about postcolonialism, or is its main lesson one of failure? Haiti and the Americas brings together an interdisciplinary group of essays to examine the influence of Haiti throughout the hemisphere, to contextualize the ways that Haiti has been represented over time, and to look at Haiti's own cultural expressions in order to think about alternative ways of imagining its culture and history. Thinking about Haiti requires breaking through a thick layer of stereotypes. Haiti is often represented as the region's nadir of poverty, of political dysfunction, and of savagery. Contemporary media coverage fits very easily into the narrative of Haiti as a dependent nation, unable to govern or even fend for itself, a site of lawlessness that is in need of more powerful neighbors to take control. Essayists in Haiti and the Americas present a fuller picture developing approaches that can account for the complexity of Haitian history and culture.

En tal período, la ideología del mestizaje estructuró los discursos fundacionales de la cubanidad, tal como se obs…erva en la obra de escritores tan disímiles como José Antonio Saco, Domingo del Monte, Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, José Martí, Fernando Ortiz, Emilio Ballagas, Nicolás Guillén, Juan Marinillo, Jorge Mañach, Alejo Carpentier y José Lezama Lima. Este libro discute el imaginario del mestizaje en términos de una estrategia discursiva que pretendió resolver (o disolver) los conflictos que amenazaban la consolidación de un proyecto nacional moderno. En muchos casos, la ideología del mestizaje buscó asimilar y contener el componente africano de la nación, dejando más o menos intactas las relaciones jerárquicas de poder y prestigio que se forjaron en el período colonial. Esta dinámica parece recurrente en varias de las sucesivas reformulaciones de la identidad cubana que responden a la heterogeneidad sociocultural de la isla, particularmente, en períodos de crisis social y política. La imaginación mestiza no se ve aquí como el resultado de los indudables procesos de transculturación acaecidos en el continente, sino más bien como una instancia discursiva del poder letrado que genera ?imaginarios sosegantes? Aborda los discursos raciales y propone una relectura de figuras canónicas del pensamiento cubano de los siglos XIX y XX.
