Cloth. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. First Edition. Small square 4to (10 1/8" x 8 7/8"), gray cloth with silver lettering on spine & blind-stamped double-dolphin logo of Thames & Hudson on front cover, Mylar-protected photographic dust jacket of a female nude beside a marble sculpture by Rodin (unclipped) designed by Trix Wetter, gray endpapers, 128 pages. A beautifully photographed and executed celebration of Rodin's nudes and textures. EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION internally and externally. François Auguste Rodin (1840 - 1917), known as "Auguste Rodin" was a French sculptor. Although Rodin is generally considered the progenitor of modern sculpture. He was schooled traditionally, took a craftsman-like approach to his work. Sculpturally, Rodin possessed a unique ability to model a complex, turbulent, deeply pocketed surface in clay. Many of his most notable sculptures were roundly criticized during his lifetime. Rodin's most original work departed from traditional themes of mythology and allegory, modeled the human body with realism, and celebrated individual character and physicality. From the unexpected realism of his first major figure - inspired by his 1875 trip to Italy - to the unconventional memorials whose commissions he later sought, Rodin's reputation grew, such that he became the preeminent French sculptor of his time. By 1900, he was a world-renowned artist. Wealthy private clients sought Rodin's work after his World's Fair exhibit, and he kept company with a variety of high-profile intellectuals and artists. Rodin remains one of the few sculptors widely known outside the visual arts community.

Label scar to dustwrapper's upper panel. Very good condition. "Auguste Rodin rose from humble origins to become one of the most influential sculptors of all time. Regarded during his life as a Michelangelo of the modern age, Rodin mirrored the multiple facets of the human condition through the lifelike quality of the figures he portrayed, and challenged existing notions of form by considering details of finished works in a variety of different media. . Jennifer Gough-Cooper's photographs capture qualities in the sculpture that are often not immediately apparent, revealing soft Impressionist forms with a wonderful painterly quality.".
