This paper contains remarks on the theory of Theodor Grotthus (1785-1722), the spheroidal state, and decomposition of water by white hot platinum. In 1847 Grove was awarded the Royal Medal for his paper "On the gas voltaic battery" and his Bakerian lecture "On certain phenomena of voltaic ignition and the decomposition of water into its constituent gases by heat." William Grove received the M.S. from Brasenose College, Oxford in 1835. Grove was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1840 and from 1841 to 1846 was professor of experimental philosophy at the London Institution.
