Hooks was the long-time executive director of the NAACP, serving from 1978-1992 and was largely responsible to revitalizing the organization. He died in 2010. 9'' x 6''. Original black cloth lettered in gilt. In original unclipped (no price) color pictorial dust jacket. 388 pages. Inscribed by author Hooks to front endpaper: "To / Denise Allen / Thanks / & / Peace / Benjamin Hooks." Jacket lightly rubbed. A couple of small corner bumps. Else clean and sound. Near fine in a near fine jacket.

First edition. Written with Guess; foreword by Dennis Archer, the 2003/2004 American Bar Association president. INSCRIBED BY HOOKS on the front free endpaper simply, "Thanks / BWHooks" (not inscribed to anyone). "As leader of the NAACP for 15 years, Benjamin Hooks oversaw the organization's position on affirmative action and federal aid to the poorer neighborhoods of American cities. He particpated in dialogues with the governments of South Africa and in hundreds of domestic issues affecting minorities in the United States" (from the jacket flap). Fine in fine dust jacket with just a touch of minor wear.

A former professional football player, Kemp [1935-2009] was a long-serving member of U.S. House of Representatives and secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development under President George H.W. Bush. He ran for president in 1988 and was Bob Dole's running mate in 1996.
