The Marmes Rockshelter is one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Pacific Northwest, not only due to its 11,000-year record of human use, but also because of the attention it generated towards American archaeology throughout the Northwest, the nation, and the world. The political story behind the discovery and excavation of early Holocene human skeletal remains at the Marmes site encapsulates, and helped incite, changes in archaeological studies following passage of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. This contributed to current Cultural Resources Management processes, driven by federal government mandates to preserve archaeological materials and information and to seek greater public involvement in management program. These mandates, in fact, have led full-circle to this study, a complete analysis and interpretation of all of the available information from the rockshelter and floodplain areas of the site, and completion of a final report some thirty years after the Marmes site was excavated.

Combining authoritative scholarship and lucid, lively prose, the Fourth Edition of The Harvard Dictionary of Music is the essential guide for musicians, students, and everyone who appreciates music. The Harvard Dictionary of Music has long been admired for its wide range as well as its reliability. This treasure trove includes entries on all the styles and forms in Western music; comprehensive articles on the music of Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Near East; descriptions of instruments enriched by historical background; and articles that reflect today's beat, including popular music, jazz, and rock. Throughout this Fourth Edition, existing articles have been fine-tuned and new entries added so that the dictionary fully reflects current music scholarship and recent developments in musical culture. Encyclopedia-length articles by notable experts alternate with short entries for quick reference, including definitions and identifications of works and instruments. More than 220 drawings and 250 musical examples enhance the text. This is an invaluable book that no music lover can afford to be without." -- Source: Publisher ; FINE/FINE. Book.

This book is an intimate portrait of the life of Charles XII, the warrior king of Sweden from 1697 to 1718, based on the accounts of Colonel Klingspor, who fought at his side. It tells the story of how Charles the Eleventh reigned in Sweden, his efforts to leave Sweden militarily strong, and strategically well-positioned within the domestic and international political landscape of the day. His son, Charles, ascended to the throne at 15, and many questioned his youth and readiness. However, what he lacked in years, he made up for in military genius, leading the Swedish Empire through a series of victories in the Great Northern War. His daring escapades, such as the crossing of the Dvina River and the capture of Warsaw, were dazzling both to friend and foe. But the challenges of war took their toll on Sweden, and their fortunes eventually reversed, ending with Charles' death at the Siege of Fredriksten in 1718. The book explores Charles' human qualities, his close relationships, and the lasting impact of his reign on Sweden's geopolitical standing in the 18th century. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
