Photography, text, design by Guus Rijven. - Deshima was built in the early seventeenth century in Nagasaki Bay to accommodate the 'barbaric' foreigners who wanted to trade. In contrast to colonial practices elsewhere in the world, trade was established peacefully. Japan remained autonomous and still profited from trade with the West, especially the Netherlands. From 1641 to 1859, the VOC and the State of the Netherlands managed the trading post. The Dutch had to pay homage to the ruler of Japan. To do so, they travelled to his castle in Edo (Tokyo) every year and later every four years, bearing gifts. This journey was called the 'Court Journey' and Deshima was the starting point, while the shogun's fortress in Edo was the place of arrival. The journey took three to four months.This book mixes the present with the past, and brings Deshima and the city of Nagasaki to life in a multifaceted way with the Dragon of the White. By extensively highlighting the starting point of the Court Journey, as well as the end point Tokyo, these books give the traveller a magnificent impression of the road in between. And provide him with the compass for the journey through his imagination. This Court Journey is also described in a manuscript from 1789 that is published for the first time in this edition. This recently donated journal by Adriaen Devosch marks the transition from book 1 to book 2. - Text in Dutch.
