Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Glassine Wrapper. Clarke Hutton (illustratore). First Edition/First Printing. John Wiltshire, a Scottish copra trader, arrives on the South Sea island of Falesá. He meets a rival trader named Case, who arranges for him to be "married" to a local girl named Uma in a ceremony designed to impress the natives but to be completely non-binding in the view of Europeans. He soon discovers that Uma has a taboo attached to her which causes all the other natives to refuse to do business with him, to Case's profit. He also hears of Case having been involved in the deaths of his previous competitors. It seems that Case's influence over the villagers stems from their belief that he has demonic powers, as a result of his simple conjuring tricks and tricks produced by imported technologies such as luminous paint and Aeolian harps.

Aggiungi al carrelloExtracted from Celebrities of the Army, edited by Commander C.N. Robinson, R.N., and published in fortnightly sixpenny parts, in London, by George Newnes, circa 1900. 'At a time when all eyes are turned to the operations of our troops in South Africa, those who are responsible for the organisation of our forces at home, and their conduct in the field, are much in the public mind. This series of CELEBRITIES OF THE ARMY will present its chiefs and leaders in a very vivid manner. . the public craves to know more of the men whom it trusts, and to whom it looks to accomplish its will. They will be shown in this series, in a manner that is at once striking and altogether new, by admirable portraits in colours and life-like presentments of character in the text.' The page measures 37 x 27.5 cms, and the image area (not including the caption), measures about 25 x 19 cms. A brief career and character sketch of the subject appears on the reverse of the portrait. One leaf only, folio.
