Soft cover. Condizione: Fine. 344 p. Includes bibliography. Others and the Construction of Early Christian Identities is a collection of essays that examine how those perceived as others were differentiated, excluded and devalued in various early Christian sources, both inside and outside the New Testament canon. Early Christian polemic is set in its larger historical and cultural contexts in essays that deal with ancient literary images of religious prejudice, ancient polemical labeling, and portraits of Christians as others in non-Christian sources. Many essays adopt an inter-disciplinary approach and apply social psychological or sociological concepts to analyze how images of otherness constructed and solidified early Christian identities. In this way it is possible to explain the othering processes in foundational Christian documents which have had a lasting influence on Christian attitudes to outsiders and which still shape contemporary Christian identities.

Hardcover. Condizione: VERY GOOD. 291pp. Sewn binding in printed hardcovers, sans DJ as issued. Ex-library; exceedingly clean and sharp with sound binding and no evidence of use. Shipped professionally in a box. 'This book challenges current scholarly consensus concerning John's references to the Jews in two ways. First, the author suggests that John's portrayal of the Jews cannot be understood as a response to the violent policy of John's opponents. Second, the author claims that John's portrayal of Jewishness is much more ambivalent than is often claimed today. The first part of the book offers a detailed criticism on the so called two-level reading strategy which claims that John's references to the Jews emerge from the conflict with rabbinic Judaism. The second part examines in detail John's relationship to some basic markers of Jewishness. The book contributes to the ongoing discussion of anti-Judaism in John and efforts to understand John's historical setting' (Publisher's Blurb).

The articles examine how Jewish and Christian sources participate in the processes of collective recollection and in this way contribute to the construction of distinctive social identities. The writers demonstrate the benefits of the use of interdisciplinary methodologies in the study of early Judaism and Christianity but also discuss potential problems that have emerged when modern theories have been applied to ancient material. With 12 contributions by Samuel Byrskog, Alan Kirk, Sandra Huebenthal et al. 311 Seiten, gebunden (Novum testamentum et orbis antiquus/Studien zur Umwelt des Neuen Testaments; Vol. 116/Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht 2016).
