Hardback. Condizione: Very Good. New city. New school. Michael is feeling all alone--until he discovers the school garden! There's so many ways to learn, and so much work to do. Taste a leaf? Mmm, nice and tangy hot. Dig for bugs? "Roly-poly!" he yells. But the garden is much more than activities outdoors: making school garden stone soup, writing Found Poems and solving garden riddles, getting involved in community projects such as Harvest Day, food bank donations, and spring plant sales. Each season creates a new way to learn, explore and make friends. School librarian and gardener Rick Swann, in his picture book debut, describes the wonder of connecting with nature and the joy of growing and eating one's own harvest. Award-winning artist Christy Hale ( Dreaming Up, Elizabeti's Doll series) captures the brilliant color of the season and the harvest. This is the perfect book to read alone, as well as share in the classroom or with the entire family. Good read for the young gardener. Winner of the Growing Good Kids Book Award from Junior Master Gardener Program and American Horticultural Society, named Food Tanks' "15 Book for Future Foodies," and the Whole Kids Foundation Book Club selection for March 2016. Hale, Christy (illustratore).…

Hardback. Condizione: Very Good. Isamu was a boy of the East and the West. Born in the United States to a Japanese father and Scotch-Irish American mother, Isamu grew up in Japan. From his earliest years he felt the tug of his biracial heritage, never quite fitting in or thinking he belonged. Pleasure came, however, from the natural world. Color, light, and shadow. Earth, wood, and stone. Working with these forms of nature, Isamu found a way to blend his cultural divide. It was an exploration that became the cornerstone and spirit of his lifelong creative journey. With lyrical text and luminous artwork, Christy Hale tells the story of the boy who grew up to be the multifaceted artist Isamu Noguchi. Guided by his desire to enrich everyday life with art while bringing together Eastern and Western influences, Noguchi created a vast array of innovative sculptures, stage sets, furniture, and public spaces. The East-West House is a tribute to the artistic beginnings of this pioneering modern sculptor and designer. Christy Hale (illustratore). …

Paperback. Condizione: Good. A girl in Africa learns how to help take care of her younger siblings, including a new baby sister. Elizabeti has a new baby sister, so now Elizabeti has to help take care of her younger brother, Obedi. Elizabeti knows just what to do. She has been taking care of her "baby," a rock doll named Eva, since Obedi was a baby. But taking care of a real child isn't as easy as taking care of a rock doll. Elizabeti tries to sweep the floor, but Obedi pulls her hair. Elizabeti sifts rocks out of the rice, but Obedi spills it on the ground. When Elizabeti goes to get water, Obedi wiggles so much that the heavy water jug falls off her head. Poor Elizabeti. How will she get anything done? Author Stephanie Stuve-Bodeen and artist Christy Hale team up again to tell a loving and tender story that all children - and mothers - can relate to, as Elizabeti discovers the true bond she has with her little brother. Mama Elizabeti, like Elizabeti's Doll, will prove to be a classic for all ages. Check out the other titles in this series: ELIZABETI'S DOLL * ELIZABETI'S SCHOOL * MAMA ELIZABETI. Hardback. Condizione: Fair. The empowering true story of the 1931 Lemon Grove Incident, in which Mexican families in southern California won the first Mexican American school desegregation case in US history. Twelve-year-old Roberto Álvarez loved school. He, his siblings, and neighbors attended the Lemon Grove School along with the Anglo children from nearby homes. The children studied and played together as equals. In the summer of 1930, the Lemon Grove School Board decided to segregate the Mexican American students. The board claimed the children had a language handicap" and needed to be "Americanized." When the Mexican families learned of this plan, they refused to let their children enter the small, inferior school that had been erected. They formed neighborhood committee and sought legal help. Roberto, an excellent student who spoke English well, became the plaintiff in a suit filed by the Mexican families. On March 12, 1931, the case of Roberto Álvarez v. the Board of Trustees of the Lemon Grove School District was decided. The judge ruled in favor of the children's right to equal education, ordering that Roberto and all the other Mexican American students be immediately reinstated in the Lemon Grove School. The Lemon Grove Incident stands a major victory in the battle against school segregation, and a testament to the tenacity of an immigrant community and its fight for educational equality.
