Godey's popular woman's magazine, scarce in the original wrapper.

The book features engraved plates with tissue guards. Nicely bound in decorative cloth with gilt lettering and decorations on the spine. The book is a large collection of poetry and prose quotes from a variety of American and British authors, poets, and eminent figures including EDGAR ALLAN POE, Benjamin Franklin, Izaak Walton, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, John Quincy Adams, Oliver Goldsmith, William Cullent Bryant, Samuel Johnson, Ralph Waldo Emerson, John Milton, Robert Burns, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Lord Byron, Julia Ward Howe, Robert Browning, Sir Walter Raleigh, James Russell Lowell, Sir Walter Scott, John Greenleaf Whittier, William Shakespeare, Jonathan Swift, Alfred Tennyson.and many, many more. There is a "List of Authors" and a Table of Contents at the front. There is a 16 page publisher's catalog at the back. The book is structured like a dictionary, organized alphabetically by theme, to provide readers with a convenient reference to locate excerpts from notable poetry and prose works. There are dozens upon dozens of themes - here are some examples: Witches, Liberty, Prison, Madness, Hunting, Jealousy, Ghost, Slavery, Mountains, Sports, Love, Hermit, Shipwreck, Nature, Suicide, Youth, Dreams, Childhood and Children, Blindness, America, Fate, Execution, Drunkenness, Execution, Books, Chastity.and many, many more. Condition: Light soiling to the covers and spine. The back cover has a couple stains at the right edge. Cloth tears at the cover corners, and at the top/bottom edges of the spine. There is a 3" cloth split at the bottom-left edge of the spine where it meets the back cover, and a 4" cloth split at the center of the right edge of the spine where it meets the front cover. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. The text pages are in nice condition - mostly clean with only some occasional mild foxing. Name/date (1857) written lightly in pencil on the front end paper. The words "Preface" and "Dictionary" are written in old pencil handwriting at the top of the Preface page. Overall the book is in Good- condition.

Bound in contemporary green morocco, both boards elaborately decorated in gilt, the fro…nt board with "Mrs. Mary Ferris" in gilt, the spine has raised bands lined in gilt creating six compartments each repeating a decorative boarder and device in gilt save for the second from the top which has "Godey's Lady's Book" in gilt and the fourth from the top which has "1865" in gilt, gilt turn-ins, all page edges gilt, and yellow endpapers. Bound by Edward Walker & Sons with their blindstamp on the front free endpaper. The boards and spine show a bit of shelfwear, particularly along the edges, a small stain on the front board, the spine shows a bit of sunning, two small stains on the front free endpaper affecting the frontispiece, the issues are lacking their original wrappers, one fold-out with a bit of edgewear, and a few tissue guards are creased or partially torn, but overall a very good copy with the majority of the plates bright and clean.
